#1
Kaspersky claims they detected spyware inside HDD firmware.

How can it be done?

Hello everyone,

I have done a research on my own and it turned out that this might be one of those hoax stories to get media attention more than anything else. Kaspersky claimed they accuired the loader which suppose to write a virus payload to disk firmware. It is faily known that HPA can be altered, most of the guys in data recovery industry will confirm this. With so many variation of the hard disk firmware the claim there is an universal firmware payload is simply not true! Hell, almost 20 years ago the reverse engineering of hard disk drive firmware brought Russians into light. These days not just advanced data recovery technicians can alter disk firmware the way they like, but the moderate technician can do simple tweaking. I am positive one can make custom disk firmware to "spy" with it. However, the claim this is done on a wide scale simply does not fit the bill.

Thanks for reading my first post to this forum.
