New WD HDD Problems and Solutions Review
#1
Hello friends,

We have these days received some emails and support our clients to fix their patient hdds successfully and I am here to share these knowledge with everyone:

#1: All modules are good but data area is not accessible

It's one WD10EAVS hdd and after the head read/write test in DFL-WDII, the head 5 has read/write error and then users edited the head map in DFL-DE and replace head 5 with head 6 and then the hdd is read and imaged successfully. After the image in the first pass, we suggested the users to change the head map in RAM again from head 6 to 5 and amazingly, part of the data is imaged off the hdd. After extraction the data from the image with winhex, all the needed files are in good status;

#2: Some new 3TB WD hard drives, PCB1698 series and newer.
All modules are good except 6F module, and sometimes incorrect LBA is detected and data area cannot be read normally and some important necessary data is missing, other hdd repair tools cannot fix this problem.

It's one WD30EZRS hdd, within DFL-WDII, the module 6F is bad too, but other modules are good, anyway, the module 6F is not important and not in a position to affect data recovery, ignore it. We suggested the users to use Write universal firmware modules: (Backup all original ROM and SA modules and write back; The other option is that find donor resources with the same microcode and same head numbers and then write as universal firmware. It's a must to backup the original key data recovery modules as we explained in our manuals for a later stage use.) The user find one donor fw and rom module to write and then write back the key data recovery modules, amazingly the data area is read normally and all data is back.

I will write another PDF document on how to fix the PCB1698 series by Hot swap with DFL-WDII using its new and unique repair function and users can download from the user-only forums.
